Hidden Figures: Overlooked Elements of Watchmaking
Jeffrey Kingston, Editor-in-Chief of Le Quai de l’Horloge (Sun Valley, Idaho)
Thursday, May 5, 2022, 7:00pm - 9:00pm
General Society Library, 20 W 44th St, NYC
HSNY's May 2022 lecture will take place in person at the General Society Library and will also be livestreamed.
Doors open at 6PM ET, lecture and Zoom livestream to begin at 7PM ET.
Many elements of a fine watch are often overlooked by connoisseurs or not given their full due. Free-sprung balances, silicon hairsprings, copper beryllium wheels, multiple mainspring barrels and secure calendar mechanisms all could be considered the "Hidden Figures" of watchmaking.
At the May 5, 2022, lecture of the Horological Society of New York, Jeffrey Kingston will discuss these elements and show the importance and value that they bring to horology.
Doors open at 6:00pm, lecture begins promptly at 7:00pm.
Free tickets are required to attend.

HSNY Awards $100,000 In Financial Aid at Its Annual Gala (Pics)
After a two-year pause in its 156-year tradition, the Horological Society of New York (HSNY) held its annual Gala on Saturday, April 9, 2022, where it awarded $100,000 to watchmaking students and schools, and raised an additional $18,000 toward its mission of advancing the art and science of horology.
HSNY celebrated the 2022 Gala & Awards Ceremony in style at the landmark Harvard Club of New York City, where 200 members and friends reunited to toast to one of the world’s oldest continuously operating horological associations.
Highlights from the evening included a presentation by HSNY President John Teifert of the Howard Fass Award, given this year to longtime HSNY member and horological bibliophile Fortunat Mueller-Maerki. Bestowed for the third time since its creation in 2016, the Howard Fass award is HSNY’s highest honor, given to individuals judged to have shown extraordinary dedication to the ideals which the Society pursues.

ARTISAN LECTURE SERIES: Europe Divided: Huguenot Refugee Arts and Culture
THE GENERAL SOCIETY OF MECHANICS & TRADESMEN OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK
- ARTISAN LECTURE SERIES -
Spring2022
Europe Divided: Huguenot Refugee Arts and Culture, by Tessa Murdoch
Our friends (and neighbors) at The Huguenot Society of America are hosting a special lecture on April 19 at 6PM ET and its horological topic is perfect for members and friends of HSNY!
In this lecture, Tessa Murdoch will focus on the extraordinary cultural contribution made by Huguenot families in the British Isles, who were part of the diaspora of over 200,000 refugees that left France in the late 17th century to join communities already established in exile. Her talk is based on her recently published book, Europe Divided: Huguenot Refugee Arts and Culture, the culmination of forty years of research.
Dr. Murdoch will discuss the Huguenot international network, which spread across northern Europe and beyond to America and South Africa. First-generation Huguenot refugees included hundreds of trained artists, designers and craftsmen. Beyond the French borders, they raised the quality of design and workshop practice, passing on skills to their apprentices, families and to successive generations, who continued to dominate output in the luxury trades.
During her presentation, Dr. Murdoch will elaborate on how although silver and silks are the best-known fields with which Huguenot settlers in the British Isles are associated, their significant contribution to architecture, ceramics, design, engraving, furniture, woodwork, sculpture, portraiture and art education were also extraordinary, and provide fascinating insights into the motivation and resolve and achievements of the Huguenots in exile. The lecture will feature key Huguenot horological (clock and watchmaking) contributions to the skilled trades.
Horological Society of New York members can attend for the membership price of $10.
Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at 6 P.M.
This will be an online lecture.

Introducing The Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Perpetual Calendar
By Nancy Olson A perpetual calendar is among the most challenging—and the most coveted—complications. By definition, it automatically adjusts for the different durations of months and even leap years. Thus it always shows the correct date, at least for the somewhat distant future, while a “normal” date display needs periodic adjustment. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s new Polaris…
