(Isle of Man, British Isles) June 11, 2026 At the June 2026 lecture of the Horological Society of New York (HSNY), independent watchmaker Roger W. Smith OBE will trace the remarkable story of the co-axial escapement from George Daniels’ original invention in the early 1970s through to its continuing modern evolution. Beginning with Daniels’ determination to address the fundamental limitations of the Swiss lever escapement, the talk explores the development of his early experimental pocket watches, together with the long and often difficult process of persuading a skeptical Swiss watch industry to adopt an entirely new escapement system. Drawing on firsthand experience working alongside Daniels during the Millennium Watch project and the launch of the first Omega co-axial wristwatch in 1999, Smith will provide a rare personal insight into a pivotal moment in modern horological history. The second half of the presentation will examine the subsequent technical evolution of the escapement from 2005 onwards, including the development of the single-wheel co-axial and the changing philosophy behind escapement design — moving beyond pure chronometric performance towards long-term stability, durability, and extended service intervals. Previous Lecture: From Theory to Mechanism: Armin Strom’s Approach to Resonance Claude Greisler, Armin Strom Co-Founder and Master Watchmaker (Biel, Switzerland) May 4, 2026 VIEW THE LECTURE In Memoriam: Fortunat Mueller-Maerki (1946-2026) The Horological Society of New York was saddened to hear of the passing of Fortunat Mueller-Maerki on Monday, June 1. Fortunat had been an active member of the horological community for decades, was a prominent contributor to the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC), and amassed a world-class horological library that he later donated to HSNY. Fortunat was born in Switzerland in 1946 and developed a love for clocks and watches at a young age. As a student at the University of Zurich, Fortunat was living with his grandfather when the latter inherited a 300-year-old table clock and had it restored, introducing Fortunat to the field of horology and clock collecting.  His passion developed slowly while he pursued a full life outside of horology: an exchange student program in Pennsylvania that was his first experience in the U.S., college in Switzerland, then married life in an apartment in the schoolhouse where his wife Ruth worked as a teacher. After receiving a master's degree in economics from the University of Bern, Fortunat embarked on a three-month tour across the U.S. in a Volkswagen camper before enrolling at Harvard Business School. He graduated in 1975 with a master's degree in business administration and began a 25-year career at a groundbreaking executive search firm, Egon Zehnder, “the only employer I ever had,” as he used to say. He and Ruth had three children. He joined the NAWCC around the same time as he started his life in the United States. There, he took clock repair classes and became fascinated by the history of timekeeping. He also began to build his collection in new directions. “I have a collector's gene in me,” he said in 2022. “I had dozens of clocks from all over the world.”  As time passed, he continued to collect clocks but also began to amass publications on horology with a broad scope incorporating all aspects of time and timekeeping: physics, philosophy, astronomy, and fiction included. Fortunat, a lifelong bibliophile and a member of the Grolier Club, was very practical. Print publications were more affordable than watches and required less space than clocks – for him, it was very important that “you [could] get more items on the shelf!” Even so, his collection quickly filled his home in New Jersey. Today’s post was written by Miranda Marraccini. Little kids love to touch things. If you’ve ever been a parent or even just spent time with a toddler, you’ll know that an unattended cup of coffee, a billowing plastic bag on the street, or a dirty toy in the sandbox is a temptation no small child can resist. But it’s also an amazing quality, because kids are great at hands-on learning, including in the field of horology. In our library collection at the at the Horological Society of New York (HSNY), we’ve got plenty of books that show kids how to tell time. Books, however, can only go so far—and I’m saying that as a librarian. For interactive horological fun, our library boasts a selection of kits, games, puzzles, and toys to handle and assemble. One of the most charming specimens of children’s education we have is a 1940s–1950s era “junior clockmaker construction set” (image 1). On the lid of the box, a proud-looking papa in a full suit (presumably just returned from his job at a midtown advertising agency) watches over his two delighted children, who are working on their toy clock. The completed clock is shown on the left—a traditional chalet-style Black Forest or cuckoo clock, ornamented with festive boy and girl figures dancing over a 12-hour dial, two twee ducks, and a tulip motif. The blond boy on the box is staring straight out at the viewer, holding the partially assembled gear train, while his sister oohs and ahs at his progress with both her hands in the air. This colorful kit presents horology as a family activity, perhaps something to work on together in the evening at the dining table (Where is mom? Possibly washing the dishes somewhere). Although the image clearly suggests that boys are the expected audience for clock assembly, girls are invited to participate too, even if passively. Our kit, inside the box, is still colorful and intact, with a cardboard dial and both metal and plastic parts, and an illustrated instruction sheet (image 2). I’m not going to assemble and test this toy clock, but I’m tempted! I would like to be, as the instructions promise, “rightly proud of [my] achievement.” CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL POST...
