LEARN MORE & BID SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT (JULY 6-13) Meeting Recap: The Genesis of the Royal Oak: From Iconoclast to Icon   Sébastian Vivas, Heritage & Museum Director at Audemars Piguet (Le Brassus, Switzerland) June 6, 2022 For the June 2022 lecture at the Horological Society of New York (HSNY), Sébastian Vivas, Heritage & Museum Director at Audemars Piguet, lectured on the legacy of the iconic Royal Oak. After two generations of the founders’ families running the Audemars Piguet brand, Georges Golay transformed AP from a small workshop of 28 people into a modern company of 80 people. However, it was Golay’s call to the independent designer, Gérald Genta, that the genesis of the Royal Oak was created. Golay requested a sketch of a sports watch by the next day. Genta’s sketch showed the flow of circular, rounded rectangle, and octagonal elements; along with the positioning of the eight screws on the bezel. Jacquie Ottman, a fifth-generation member of the Ottman family whose storied meat-purveying firm supplied New York’s finest restaurants beginning in 1850 will present the General Society with a richly illustrated part-history, part-memoir of the Meatpacking District when it was still a vibrant working market. Travelers: Journeys on the Railroads from the Early Surveys to Modern Vacations — July 19, 2022 In this lecture, Nick Fry, Barriger Railroad Library Curator from the Barriger Collection at the St. Louis Mercantile Library, will provide a fascinating review of the journeys along the railroads from the surveys of the Army Engineers and civilians like Asa Gray to modern vacation trips by rail. This lecture is offered in conjunction with the exhibition Travelers, Tracks and Tycoons: The Railroad in American Legend and Life, curated by the St.Louis Mercantile Library at the Grolier Club. During the nineteenth century, railroads profoundly transformed the United States geographically, economically, socially, culturally and in diverse other ways, directly and indirectly.
