Held at the iconic Plaza Hotel, the black-tie event brought together 400 of the most influential figures in the watchmaking community, including independent watchmakers, top brands, VIP guests, and leading auction houses to support the future of the industry. The evening’s Charity Auction, presented by Christie’s, saw unique timepieces and experiences that raised record-breaking funds that will go directly towards expanding the Society’s initiatives, including scholarships for watchmaking students.  Items that commanded the largest hammer price included a signed Chronomètre Souverain wall clock signed by François-Paul Journe ($80,000), an omakase dinner experience with Chef Daisuke Nakazawa, donated by Grand Seiko ($24,000), and HSNY’s prestigious Lifetime Membership Card, which sold to “Shark Tank” titan Kevin O’Leary after an intense bidding war ($25,000). Hand-guillochéd by Brittany Nicole Cox, the sterling silver card features an original straight-line pattern inset with a 24k gold wire cloisonné enamel cabochon. The card grants Mr. Wonderful lifetime membership privileges at HSNY, including all aspects of all current and future membership levels. In meeting with the Society’s year-round mission, HSNY issued a symbolic giant check for $160,000 to Brian Furi (Texas Institute of Jewelry Technology, Paris, Texas) and Justin Delano (Veterans Watchmaker Initiative, Odessa, Delaware), two scholarship recipients. On Display | "Early American Pocket Watches" Exhibit Showcasing The Beginnings Of American Horological History The Horological Society of New York (HSNY), America’s oldest watchmaking guild, founded in 1866, announces today “Early American Pocket Watches,” a revolutionary exhibit showcasing a collection of pocket watches that helped shape the history of timekeeping in early America. The exhibit officially opens on January 9 and will be on display through December 2025. “Early American Pocket Watches” is made possible with the help of antiquarian horologist Richard Newman, who has spent decades preserving American horological history and now shares it for the world to see. The 42-piece curated collection spans 125 years and includes the earliest known American-signed watch (c. 1715), some of the country’s earliest known watch papers, and only-known examples in a variety of categories. “Early American Pocket Watches” timepieces were made and retailed on American soil and include examples made during Colonial America, the Revolution, and the Federal era.  The 2025 exhibit is also complemented by a fully illustrated catalog with photography by Atom Moore that captures intricate engravings, delicate watch papers, and mechanical movements manufactured throughout the Colonies. This post is part of a series, Reading Time at HSNY, written by our librarians. Today’s post was written by St John Karp.  At the Horological Society of New York (HSNY), I’m one of the librarians with an affinity for cataloging. You might think that’s as straightforward as writing down the title of the book and the name of the author, but you’d be forgetting one thing: clocks and watches are weird. We deal with a lot of unusual items that most other libraries don’t have to worry about. Your local public library, for example, has to keep well stocked on the latest popular fiction. The world of horology, on the other hand, produces so many strange things that it’s not always clear what the title of a book is. Sometimes it’s not even clear whether or not the thing is a book at all. So let’s have a gander at some of the weird and wonderful things that clock- and watchmakers have launched into the world. Then we might find an answer to the question: when is a book not a book? When It’s a Catalog A lot of kinda-sorta-maybe books are watch catalogs. If their status as a book is in doubt, then their status as a catalog is unambiguous at least. It’s just that the catalog might come in any shape or form you can imagine because watch brands like to project a certain image and make their offerings stand out. I haven’t seen a catalog distributed in the form of a pogo stick or a mind-altering mist, but it’s only a matter of time. “Prices: A Million Times, 2023” is a catalog of 17 cards in a box from Humans since 1982, the Swedish design team that produced the fabulous ClockClock 24 kinetic time-telling sculpture that hangs on the wall of HSNY’s Jost Bürgi Research Library. Each card in the set depicts a different clock produced by Humans since 1982 with accompanying information. The title, not written on the box, had to come from a price list at the back of the deck. Taking it one step further (or one step weirder) is a catalog from Richard Mille, “Endless Summer,” which contains a folded accordion-style brochure of Richard Mille’s watches with accompanying poetry. Oh, yeah, and three jigsaw puzzles. Yes, jigsaw puzzles. I haven’t had the courage to try and jumble up the pieces and put them back together, partly because I’m not cool enough to do a Richard Mille puzzle, and partly because these catalogs are so collectible that they sell for about $350 on eBay. The Clockmakers’ Museum, housed at the Science Museum in South Kensington is launching its next annual programme of  temporary displays, which will showcase extraordinary objects from public and private horological collections. The second of these, titled Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy: A Champion of British Craftsmanship, will open to the public on the 13th of November 2024. The display has been created to tell the story of the last of the great Vulliamy family of Royal clockmakers based at 68 Pall Mall, London, from 1753. Benjamin Lewis  Vulliamy was a five-times Master of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and a champion of British craftmanship.
