Fortis Watches And SSC Unveil The Documentary Microgravity – How Earth Can Benefit From Space
Taking a watch meant to go into outer space and actually testing it there only seems logical, right? That’s exactly what the ambitious people at Fortis thought. It’s why they embarked on a mission to test watches in space. The brand was part of the Swedish Space Corporation’s SubOrbital Express 3 rocket mission, space testing […]

Arcanaut Unleashes their Upcoming “Experimental” Bonehead and Tiger Sharc
If you’ve been following along on the website and podcast over the last several months, you already know about how much I enjoy Arcanaut, the small independent watchmaker based in Denmark. I reviewed my own Arc II Fordite earlier this year, a watch that, when it was all said and done, was likely my most […]

From the Editor: My Thoughts on the Breitling Chronomat B01 42 and Why I Had to Get One
It’s been more than 20 years since I purchased a new out-of-the-box
Breitling watch. In the early 1990s as I was starting my journey as a watch
collector Breitling was a brand that I truly loved. I still remember buying
my first Breitling, which was a Colt with a white dial on a brown calf
strap. Later, I added the stainless steel bracelet to the watch and I
nose-dove back then buying more than half a dozen Breitlings including
Chronomats, Crosswinds, Navitimers, Aerospace Navitimers, and a Blackbird
Chronomat that I will never forget as it was one of the two Chronomats to
have a full satin brushed —including the bracelet, rider tabs, case, and
bezel— finish at the time.

Dear HSNY,
I address this letter this way because all of you — all the members, donors, sponsors, and supporters of the Society — are HSNY as a whole.
It is again my honor to pen HSNY's holiday and New Year's greetings. I am thrilled to say this letter will be received by an ever-growing and passionate membership, and it is with your support that HSNY marks its 157th year more successful than ever. I wish all of you good grace, health, and success.
As many of you know, I find great comfort in thinking about long stretches of time. One quote this year haunted me. It took me a few months to wrap my mind around it. These few words have radically changed my perspective on history — a perspective that has come to my aid when I attempt, as we all do, to be a better person.
"We think that the world is limited and explained by its past. We tend to think that what happened in the past determines what is going to happen next, and we do not see that it is exactly the other way around! What is always the source of the world is the present; the past doesn't explain a thing. The past trails behind the present like the wake of a ship and eventually disappears."
— Alan Wilson Watts, "What Is Zen?"
When I gave the commencement speech to the graduating class at the Lititz Watch Technicum this year, I did my best to give the graduates perspective on the career they were about to embark on. Each piloting their own ship, equipped with a foundation of skills to build on.
When I heard, sadly, that former HSNY trustee Melkon Garjarian passed away in November, I hoped more than anything that he was able to pass his mastery on to someone ready to carry on his legacy.
And in the middle? Here we are in the present, each of us hopefully doing our best to make the world a better place today. It is no wonder that January takes her name from Janus, the two-faced Roman god of beginnings, endings, and time itself. Looking forward and backward at the same time. I say none of this to discount history. It is our duty to learn from past mistakes and to do what little we can to write the history we would rather know.
I wish all of you reading this the best for the coming year, and especially for the present moment. Ultimately this is all any of us ever truly have.

Recap – The Best Accessible Watches of 2023
Watches cost money; it’s as simple as that. And it’s also a given that luxury watches cost luxury money. But the assumption that you need to spend a fortune to wear something cool and stylish is wrong, luckily. While most of us might dream of tourbillons, split-second chronographs, minute repeaters or perpetual calendars, not many […]
